A poem about George Dixon and his injured putter boy

This poem is about George Dixon who refused to escape to safety with his

workmates when there was an explosion at Seaham Colliery on 8th September

1880. His young putter boy was injured and unable to be moved so George

stayed with him. They were both found dead. They had both been overcome

by afterdamp.

The poem was found by Nick Cansfield when his grandfather passed away. It

originally belonged to his grandfather's grandfather who married a Sarah Dixon

and the poem was passed down through the family. The poem must have been

written shortly after the disaster in 1880.
