Home History of Seaham - Stories and remarkable and memorable events in the history of Seaham Schools and Education in Seaham Log book of New Seaham Council School Infants Dept (Byron Terrace) 1912 to 1965

Log book of New Seaham Council School Infants Dept (Byron Terrace) 1912 to 1965

I have extracted copies of the Log Book of New Seaham Council School Infants Dept (Byron Terrace) for the years 1912 to 1919 from The National Archives. The Log Book which covers the period 1912 to 1965 gives a superb picture of the issues facing the administration and management of schools in the early 20th Century. The last entry in the Log Book was for 4th January 1965 which read:

"As from January 1st 1965 this Infant Department has been amalgamated witht the Junior Department to form New Seaham County (Byron Terrace) Junior Mixed and Infant School - No 2023 - under the Headship of Mr G W Green"

In addition to copying the first five years of the Log Book I have also copied any pages during WW2 (1939 to 1945) that mentions Air Raids or Air Raid Alerts as this is interesting in relation to the social history of the town during war.

Selected extracts from the Log Book for pages written during the period 1939 to 1945 that mention Air Raids or Air Raid Alerts.

This photograph shows Byron Terrace pupils in 1945/1946 who would have responded to the Air Alerts and Warnings recorded in the Log Book pages below. Miss Leroy is the teacher.
