During the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's, thousands of school leavers and young men underwent mining training at Seaham Colliery Training Centre and many other NCB training centres around the UK. Fully equipped and prepared with basic safety training after weeks of instruction and practice in the training galleries they would begin work at their local collieries.
Have you ever wondered what underground training and education was provided before these mining apprenticeships were introduced?
In 1937 the Londonderry Collieries Group issued the attached advice and special instructions to "Boys Starting Work in the Mines". Not quite a comprehensive induction to working down a mine!
