In 1835 the Bethel Flag was hoisted every Wednesday in the docks at Seaham Harbour and twice on Sundays. The Bethel Flag was an invitation to any sailor in harbour, of any denomination, to come on board the ship flying the flag and participate in a service of sermons, hymns and prayers. Eventually a Sailors Bethel was opened at the docks on September 20th 1846. The plot for the building and the lime to build it was given by the 3rd Marquis of Londonderry.
