California Street, Seaham Colliery (c1950)

California Street lined the Sunderland to Stockton road on the Mill Inn Bank. Twelve men and boys from this street were killed in an explosion at Seaham Colliery on 8th September 1880. The winding gear of the pit can be seen just over the rooftops on the right.
