The Low Colliery School

The Low Colliery School was built on Station Road by Lady Frances Anne Vane, 3rd Marchioness of Londonderry. Some of the teachers were Miss Heslop (head), Mrs Wilkinson, Mrs Whitwell, Mrs Green, Miss Hudspeth, Mrs Barker, Mrs Lumsden and Miss Softly. Mrs Wharton was the dinner nanny and Mrs Pigg and Mrs Allen were the cooks and Mr Snowball was the caretaker. Many pupils remember when the school roof collapsed and the pupils had to go to Byron Terrace School. The school was demolished and the Kingfisher Industrial Estate now stands on the site.
