Success in finding ancestors often comes from two things: knowing when certain types of records exist and knowing where to find these records. This article provides a quick guide to English genealogy records.
The process involves studying and tracing family pedigrees with the purpose of tracking down ancestors, creating a family tree or learning about family history. This website provides links to some of the free search websites for family history.

Another free good site is FamilySearch which is a database of the 1881 Census UK. However , to make best use of this you need a "hook" to make a first contact with an ancestors record. A "hook" is a rough idea of an ancestor born before 1881 (and therefore on the 1881 census), a rough idea of their year of birth and the place they lived in 1881.
