Sunderland Echo 2nd September 1919

William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody was an American soldier, bison hunter and showman. He started work at the age of eleven after his father's death and became a rider for the Pony Express at the age of 15. During the American Civil War he served for the Union from 1863 to the end of the war in 1865.

Cody received the nickname "Buffalo Bill" after the Civil War when he won a contract to supply Kansas Pacific Railroad workers with buffalo meat. Later he served as a civilian scout during the Indian Wars receiving the Medal of Honour in 1872.

His reputation began to spread and he started performing in shows that displayed cowboy themes and episodes from the frontier and Indian Wars. He founded Buffalo Bills Wild West Show in 1883 taking his large company on tours around Great Britain and Europe in 1887.
