Letter from the Marchioness of Londonderry encouraging Child training (1911)

In 1911 the Marchioness of Londonderry wrote to the Mother’s Union at all of her colliery districts. She reminded them of the responsibility of mothers to “train” their children. We can all accept that this is a commendable objective. However, she exposes her view that the mother’s influence on the behaviour of their children could affect, not only their children’s destiny and the future of Great Britain, but also the destiny of the “three hundred and fifty million of coloured men and women scattered throughout the five continents of the world”.

The second part of her letter gives an insight into her views of the political and social place (in 1911) of “white men and women of the British Empire” and the responsibility of future white children to “rule well”. There is no indication of a desire for racial equality with the inhabitants of the five continents. Thank goodness attitudes in society have changed over the last century.
