Extract from the Autobiography of Sir Archibald Alison

Sir Archibald Alison was an internationally renowned historian and friend of the 3rd Marquis of Londonderry and his wife Lady Frances Anne Vane. His crowning achievment was the "History of Europe" which was a history of Europe from the French Revolution to the Borbouns. He was a regular visitor to Seaham Hall and Wynyard Park and made many speeches and talks to Seaham dignatories including presentations at the Londonderry Literary Institute. This extract from his autobiography reveals some very interesting facts about the funding of the building of Seaham Harbour and the new town and the indomnitable character of Lady Frances Anne Vane. In the 1800's it was unknown for a member of the aristocracy to be involved with business and commerce and when the 3rd Marquis died in 1854 everyone assumed his business concerns and estate would be managed by his Agent and managers. However, they did not anticipate that his wife, Lady Francess Anne Vane, would take full control of the business and all of the Londonderry concerns and be personally involved in every commercial decision.
