The government were dismayed at the abysmal condition of housing in the UK and embalked upon a national programme of slum clearance. Progress was made throughout the 1930's but was interupted by the bombings in World War 2 which created a shortage of houses. The programme of slum clearance was completed in most towns by the early 1960's.
