The Seaham Glassworks was a major industry producing 20 million bottles per year. It produced bottles for Gilbey's Gin and others and the company was subsumed within the United Glass Bottle Manufacturers towards the end of its life. The bottles were shipped to Rotherhithe in London on board the SS Lollard until 1887 and then the SS Oakwell. The SS Oakwell hit a mine in 1917 and sank with the loss of four crew off Robin Hood's Bay in North Yorkshire. The company suffered from over-production in the industry and closed in 1921. The Bottleworks site was not cleared until many decades afterwards.
