Phase 1 of the school was erected in 1964 at a cost of £369,129 to a size of 870 places. It was occupied for teaching purposes on 7th September 1964 and the formal opening ceremony was conducted on 25th February 1965 by Councillor H Mitchel JP and Chairman Councillor J Walker. Phase 2 of the school was erected in 1972/73 which extended it to 1,200 places at a cost of £367,794. It was opened for teaching purposes in September 1973.
First opened as a Grammar Technical School on 7th September 1964. Became a Comprehensive School in 1979.
