Seaham Iron Shipbuilding Company

The lifeboat house, now the East Durham Heritage & Lifeboat Centre, can be clearly seen at the foot of the Lighthouse Cliff.

The area below the Lighthouse Cliff was the site of the Seaham Iron Shipbuilding Company which built three iron ships in the 1880’s. The Managing Director of the company, Mr RJ Iliff, was declared bankrupt and two of the vessels were removed to shipyards in Sunderland to be completed. The third was completed by Mr John Morrice and the first iron ship to be completed at Seaham (the “Linthorpe”) was successfully launched into the dock basin on 21st October 1884.
