Shops and Businesses on Princess Road, Dawdon

I promised to compile a list of all the Shops and Businesses on Princess Road at the time that I lived there or thereabouts, well, here it is, as far as I can remember. Many thanks to Brian Jefferson, Jill Bennett, and various others who jogged my memory (what's left of it). This list is anything but definitive and I welcome any corrections which anyone is prepared to offer. If there are any glaring mistakes I'll just say mea culpa and bow to superior knowledge. Various photos that have been posted on here in the past, including Brian Slee's above, seem to imply that there were shops on each side at the top of the various streets (Corcyra, Benevente, Dillon etc.) which ran from the east up to Princess Rd. By the time I appeared on this world (1952) a lot had disappeared, and a lot have gone since. This, as far as I can remember, is how it was in my childhood days of the late 50's early 60's. I'll start on the west side of the road with number 1, go all the way up to Dawdon Bridge, then come back along the east side to Dawdon crossings.

Nr. 39 Another sweet shop, can't remember the name.

Dawdon Workingmen's Club (a yer 'filliated?)
The Princess Theatre Cinema, to the rear of which was Arthur Brown's Dairy.

Nr. 88 Dawson's Bakery (Oh the aroma of fresh bread, and they sold broken biscuits out of the tin)
Nr. 89 The Chip shop (can't remember the name but I do know they did the best spam fritters in town and they emigrated to Spain in the late 60's. I'm sure John Hough will be able to name them)
Nr. 90 John Wilkinson's Hairdresser's (something for the weekend sir?)
Nr 91 Hutton's Haberdashery
Nr. 92 Franklin's Wool shop
Nr. 97 Tommy Little's Off Licence
Nr. 113 Marraty's Bicycle and Toy shop (before he moved to Church St.)
Nr. 120 Stan Neal's Greengrocer's and at the rear, Princess Dairy, my home for the first 8 years of my life.
Nr. 128 I think this was a Hairdresser's. I'm sure Bryan Snowball will be able to help on this one as he lived about 10 yards away.
Nr. 135 Totty Lonsdale, Builder and decorator.
Nr 136 The Bike Shop
Nr 137 & 138 Hunters Dress Shop with Jefferson's Chiropodists at the rear.
Nr.139 Wynne & Purdy General store
Nr. 140 Ankers Newsagents
Nrs: 21 to 25 apply to the Cemetery and the Fire Station but I'm not sure which.
Nrs. 43 to 59 apply to the Co-op, Dawdon Club, and the Princess.
It's astonishing how many sweet shops are in the vicinity of the Princess Cinema. It must have been very popular in it's day for so many to exist in such close proximity.
